[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] As an unprecedented heatwave is expected, second cooling appliances are gaining popularity.
According to Emart on the 7th, demand for small air conditioners such as 'portable air conditioners' and 'window air conditioners' has increased as second air conditioners. In May alone, sales of portable air conditioners at Emart increased 12 times compared to April.
In particular, the 'circulator,' which has become a representative summer appliance with significant annual sales growth, has become smarter by combining air purification functions. In fact, at Emart, sales from January to May increased by 97.3% compared to the same period last year, surpassing fan sales for the first time this year. Circulators send the cool air from air conditioners to each room or farther away.
Accordingly, after testing the sale of 'portable air conditioners' at some stores last year and receiving positive consumer responses, Emart is expanding the event to all stores this year and is holding a small summer appliance event featuring portable air conditioners, air-purifying circulators, and more until the 16th.
The event's representative product, the 'Shinil Portable Air Conditioner,' is sold at 238,000 KRW, with an additional 20,000 KRW discount when purchased with the event card, down from the original price of 258,000 KRW. The 'Shinil Air-Purifying Circulator,' which includes air purification functions, is available for 199,800 KRW with a 40,000 KRW discount on the event card purchase, down from the original 239,800 KRW.
Portable and window air conditioners have the advantage of not requiring a separate outdoor unit. Unlike traditional large air conditioners, they can be easily installed without pipe holes or additional construction, making them ideal for rental houses or studio apartments. In newly built apartments, where built-in air conditioners are common, purchases of portable and window air conditioners as second air conditioners are increasing, and in general households, purchases are rising for installation in rooms where the living room air conditioner’s cool air does not reach.
Yang Seung-kwan, an Emart home appliance buyer, said, “Portable and window air conditioners, which can be easily installed without a separate outdoor unit, are gaining great popularity as second air conditioners,” and added, “Since an unprecedented heatwave is expected again this year, sales are expected to increase significantly.”
