[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] A woman in her 50s who swindled money from victims under the pretext of introducing women was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Lee Sang-yeop) announced on the 5th that A (53, female), who was tried on charges of fraud, was sentenced to 5 months in prison.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "Considering the multiple prior convictions of the same kind, the failure to reach settlements with victims except for one, and the unrecovered damages exceeding 40 million won from victim B, a prison sentence was imposed. However, to allow an opportunity for settlement, no detention in court was ordered."
In January 2018, A proposed to victim B, "I will introduce you to a woman to marry. She is a nurse by profession; please meet her," showing a photo of the woman.
Later, A pretended to be the woman and deceived B by saying, "I want to go on a blind date, but my family member is hospitalized and urgently needs hospital fees. If you lend me money, I will repay it soon."
It was revealed that A swindled a total of 59.8 million won over 27 occasions using this method.
In addition, A was also indicted on charges of deceiving a salted seafood company to steal salted seafood and kimchi worth about 150,000 won, and borrowing 1.4 million won from a shaman and embezzling it.
