[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) announced on the 5th that it carried out environmental cleanup activities together with environmental organizations and companies to mark the 25th ‘Environment Day’.
Under the theme of ‘Green Transition, Opening a New Future,’ a total of 420 people from environmental organizations, public institutions, and companies participated in the event, collecting illegally dumped trash in the Yeosu Industrial Complex and Yulchon Industrial Complex.
At the Yeosu Industrial Complex, the event was organized by the Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council. About 300 people from public institutions such as the province and Yeosu City, as well as companies, participated in cleanup activities around Usundo and along four road sections.
Also, at the Yulchon Industrial Complex, the Jeonnam Sustainable Development Council led the event, with about 100 people from the province, Suncheon City, environmental organizations, and companies collecting trash dumped along three road sections near Jangdo Park.
Starting with this environmental cleanup activity, the province plans to conduct joint publicity and monitoring activities with cities, counties, and environmental organizations to prevent illegal dumping in industrial complexes and to carry out regular cleanup activities.
Park Hyun-sik, Director of the Environment and Forestry Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “Through this ‘Environment Day’ commemorative cleanup activity, we hope that residents, exhausted from COVID-19, will regain vitality in a cleaner living environment.”
Meanwhile, ‘Environment Day’ was established at the ‘United Nations Conference on the Human Environment’ held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. Korea designated June 5th as a legal holiday since 1996 and has promoted environmental conservation events every year to raise awareness and encourage practical action for environmental protection.
