Jongno-gu, Inspection of Private Buildings in Safety Blind Spots

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) is conducting a free, ongoing "Visiting Private Building Safety Inspection" to alleviate residents' concerns about aging buildings and facilities.

While large-scale multi-use facilities have regularly undergone safety inspections based on the "Special Act on the Safety and Maintenance of Facilities," safety management for small- to medium-sized buildings closely related to daily life has been somewhat insufficient.

Accordingly, Jongno-gu has implemented safety inspections where building experts from the District Office's Architecture Division and Regional Building Safety Center team visit aging buildings in safety blind spots upon application by the owner or manager.

Additionally, considering Jongno's geographical characteristics, inspections of facilities such as retaining walls and stone walls are also conducted.

The inspection targets are buildings under 15 floors and with a total floor area of less than 30,000㎡ that are not subject to mandatory safety inspections. Buildings already under regular inspection according to related laws such as the Special Act on the Safety and Maintenance of Facilities, the Building Act, and the Apartment Management Act are excluded.

The procedure is that if the owner or manager of a building or facility wishes to have a safety inspection, the building register is checked, and the inspection date is pre-arranged before the visit.

Experts in architectural structure and design within the Regional Building Safety Center team visit the site, listen to user opinions, visually inspect the building's condition, and if the risk level is severe, guide measures such as detailed inspections and precise safety diagnoses, helping to ensure continuous management.

Applications can be made by downloading the application form from the Jongno-gu Office website and submitting it in person or by mail by the owner or manager of the building or facility requesting inspection. Telephone applications to the Jongno-gu Architecture Division Regional Building Safety Center are also possible. The inspection service is free of charge.
