Seungro Lee, Seongbuk-gu Mayor, Shouts "Go Away COVID-19 Fatigue!" While Cleaning Streets with Water

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) is shouting "Go away, COVID-19 fatigue!" while conducting large-scale water cleaning at multi-use public places and major arterial roads.

The first cleaning started at 10 a.m. on the 4th at Samseongyo Fountain Square. Mayor Lee Seung-ro, along with about 30 district officials and environmental officers, used cleaning vehicles such as water trucks, street sweepers, and dust collectors to wash the area around Samseongyo Fountain Square.

They thoroughly cleaned approximately 600 meters of roads, traffic facilities, sidewalks, and road gutters up to the intersection at the entrance of Seongbuk-gu Office, while also conducting special disinfection measures in response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Residents watching this scene on the street waved their hands or gave thumbs-up signs in support. Hong Hwaja (57), a resident of Dongsomun-dong, said, "Because of COVID-19, my heart felt gloomy and the world seemed gloomy, but seeing the streets being thoroughly washed gave me a somehow refreshing feeling."

In fact, Seongbuk-gu planned this water cleaning not only to create a pleasant environment but also to invigorate the spirits of residents feeling fatigued due to COVID-19. Mayor Lee Seung-ro is personally directing the tight schedule.

Seongbuk-gu plans to conduct large-scale water cleaning every Tuesday and Thursday until mid-next month, avoiding commuting hours, targeting six multi-use locations such as Hanaro Street, Seongbukcheon Barammadang, and Jeongneung Traffic Plaza, as well as six major arterial road sections including Dongsomun-ro, Jongam-ro, and Hwarang-ro.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu said, "As the hot weather begins in earnest, many residents complain about difficulties wearing masks and fatigue from COVID-19," adding, "Since district officials are working hard enough to come up with the idea of using regular cleaning that removes old grime caused by fine dust and car exhaust as an event to comfort and encourage residents' hearts, I ask for a little more attention and practice of social distancing, even if it is inconvenient."
