Majority Violated Curfew
Hundreds Also Charged with Robbery and Looting
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] According to the AP News on the 4th (local time), more than 10,000 people have been arrested by the police during the racial discrimination protests triggered by the death of Black man George Floyd.
According to AP News' tally, after the death of Black man George Floyd in Minnesota on the 25th of last month, the number of people arrested during racial discrimination protests across the United States exceeded 10,000. The largest number of arrests, about 2,500, occurred in Los Angeles (LA), followed by about 2,000 in New York. In the capital Washington DC, about 400 people were also detained.
Most of those arrested by the police are charged with relatively minor offenses such as violating curfew orders or disobeying dispersal orders. It is known that hundreds were arrested on charges of robbery and looting.
While some in the political sphere claim that external forces intervened in these protests, AP pointed out that this was not the case. Contrary to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's claim that 80% of protest participants in Minnesota came from outside the state, among the 52 people arrested in Minnesota over the past weekend, 41 held driver's licenses issued by Minnesota. In Washington DC, 86% of those arrested were found to live in Washington DC or come from Maryland and Virginia, which are adjacent to Washington DC.
Meanwhile, in LA, the "People's Assembly" raised $2 million (about 2.4 billion KRW) as funds to be used for the arrested protesters. AP explained that more than 460,000 people donated small amounts of $10 to $20 (about 12,000 to 24,000 KRW) each. This fund is scheduled to be delivered to the LA branch of the human rights movement group "Black Lives Matter" and the American Bar Association, which has been leading human rights protection movements since the 1930s.
