[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The site of the relocated military base in Jakdong, Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi Province, has been selected as a target site for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's 'Vacant Space Cultural Regeneration Basic Plan Research Project,' marking the first step toward a development project.

According to Bucheon City on the 4th, this contest was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Regional Culture Promotion Agency. Among a total of 19 candidate sites, seven facilities were finally selected through document screening and on-site inspections. The Jakdong military base site was recognized as a vacant space with high preservation value and potential for cultural utilization.

Bucheon City purchased the Jakdong military base site, spanning 22,000 pyeong, in September last year and is preparing the project with the goal of creating a cultural and artistic creative space to establish a foundation for the industrialization of culture, as well as an eco-friendly complex cultural space in the city for citizens' relaxation.

The 'Education, Science, and Culture Theme Park' to be established on the Jakdong military base site is laying the groundwork to approach citizens in various ways by installing educational and residency facilities for nurturing talent in future industries, high-quality art and cultural activity spaces, exhibition facilities, and art museums.

The city plans to seek development plans linked to national projects through this contest and create a substantial space that citizens can utilize. It is also expected to enhance the regional value of the Jakdong military base relocation site and the potential for cultural regeneration projects, as well as to derive directions for efficient development.

A Bucheon City official stated, "Being selected in this contest is a meaningful first step for the development of the Jakdong military base," adding, "We will prepare a basic plan to breathe new life into the Jakdong detached housing district, which has been stagnant due to long-term separation by the military base and green spaces, and to enrich citizens' lives by linking it with the city center."
