[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Optical lens company Digital Optics announced on the 3rd that it will officially expand its business by establishing a separate division for the scanner optical engine field and increasing sales personnel.
The new business area the company is focusing on is the dental equipment sector within the healthcare industry, which has high growth potential. Digital Optics has already succeeded in independently developing two types of optical engines for dental scanners?stand-type and hand-type?and is supplying them to dental equipment manufacturers. The company explained that through this process, it has glimpsed the potential of the new business and is accelerating its business expansion.
The most discussed product recently in the dental equipment industry is the oral scanner device that can be held with one hand to check the condition of a patient's teeth. This device projects a patterned beam onto the patient's teeth, and a camera recognizes the curvature of the projected pattern to shape the teeth using 3D software technology. Based on the recognized 3D shape, implants and various dental prosthetics can be manufactured to match the patient's existing teeth exactly.
The component that plays a key role in the oral scanner is the part that projects the patterned beam, and Digital Optics' optical engine equipment performs this function. This is based on the projector optical engine technology, in which the company has secured competitiveness through its existing business. The company has accumulated technical know-how by supplying projector optical engines to major domestic corporations for over ten years.
A representative from Digital Optics said, “It is not well known that there are companies in Korea developing optical engines for scanners, so many dental equipment manufacturers have been importing optical engines from China or Taiwan. Our company has sufficient technological competitiveness in the optical engine field. We want to secure new growth momentum through continuous product development and contribute to the localization trend of materials, parts, and equipment.”
As part of this effort, the company is further strengthening its optical engine product lineup. Based on scanning optical engine technology, it is developing optical engines for facial recognition scanners, vascular recognition, and smart factories, and is currently supplying samples. The company expects visible results when the developers who received the samples begin mass production of their products starting next year.
