Distribution of 'Yellow Cards' to Prevent Traffic Accidents for 1st Graders in Gwangjin-gu Elementary Schools

Expected to prevent traffic accidents during walking by ensuring visibility for over 2,400 children in 1st grade of elementary school

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has produced and distributed a day and night light-reflective pedestrian safety item called the 'Yellow Card' that can be attached to bags to prevent children's traffic accidents.

The 'Yellow Card' was created as part of the '2020 Customized Resident Safety Project' to reflect the increased social interest in children's traffic safety following the recent enforcement of the Min-sik Act.

According to an investigation of 134 traffic accidents involving children under 12 in the area over the past three years, 44% (67 out of 152 injured) were pedestrian accidents, with many accidents occurring due to drivers failing to notice children, requiring caution.

In response, the district focused on the fact that children’s short stature makes it difficult for drivers to see them, leading to the distribution of the Yellow Card.

In March, the district distributed about 2,400 Yellow Cards to first-grade elementary school students through schools.

Earlier, as part of the '2020 Customized Resident Safety Project,' on May 8, Parents' Day, the district also distributed 'LED Smart Safety Canes' to about 300 elderly living alone.

Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, "We are carrying out the '2020 Customized Resident Safety Project' to protect residents from danger through small ideas in daily life," adding, "The newly produced 'Yellow Card' is expected to be effective in preventing children's traffic accidents by increasing the distance at which pedestrians are noticed during driving through light reflection, making them visible anywhere."
