Gwangju City Selects Four Types of Disaster Safety Accidents Gwangju City Hall

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City selected four types of disaster safety accidents to focus on this month in preparation for this summer's abnormal heat phenomena: heat waves, heavy rain (monsoon), water play, and electric shock, urging citizens to be cautious.

The average nationwide temperature during summer tends to rise overall, although there are annual differences. In particular, the average temperature in June is expected to be similar to or higher than the normal (24.7℃), so attention to heat-related illnesses is necessary.

In this regard, the city has designated the period from May 20 to September 30 as the heat wave countermeasure period to intensively manage vulnerable groups and facilities against heat waves.

Additionally, when temperatures of 35℃ or higher persist for more than three days, the Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters will be immediately activated.

Currently, 335 umbrella-shaped shade shelters are operating throughout Gwangju, and depending on weather conditions, watering vehicles held by autonomous districts will be operated. The road watering devices (Clean Road System) installed last year between Geungnakgyo~Songjeong Station and Munhwa Jeondang Station~Geumnamno 4-ga sections will also be operated this year.

Precipitation is expected to be similar to or less than the normal (181.5㎜), but heavy rain is forecast mainly in the southern regions in late June, so caution is required due to the high risk of localized heavy rain in certain areas.

Moreover, as water play begins from early this month, a water play safety management period will be operated until August 31. Four areas, including Imgokgyo (Hwangryonggang) in Gwangsan-gu and the Citizen's Forest water play area, are designated as water play zones with emergency duty teams organized and operated.

Kim Kyung-mi, the city's Safety Policy Officer, said, “According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, heavy rain is expected in late June, so it is necessary to inspect house drains and drainage around homes in advance and pay attention to frequent electric shock accidents during the monsoon season.” She added, “We hope citizens take an interest in disaster safety accidents, learn the action guidelines, and prepare in advance.”
