[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Seulgi Kim] Mayu Watanabe (26), who was the 'center' member of the Japanese idol group AKB48, has announced her retirement from the entertainment industry.
On the 1st, her agency Production Ogi stated, "Mayu Watanabe left the company at the end of last month. Due to health reasons, it became difficult for her to continue her entertainment activities, so we respected her wishes and terminated the contract."
The agency added, "We apologize to those who have supported her for a long time for the sudden retirement announcement, and we deeply thank everyone for their support. We will prioritize her physical and mental recovery and focus on her health so that she can return to a normal life."
Meanwhile, Mayu Watanabe debuted as a 3rd generation member of AKB48 in 2007. She ranked first in the AKB48 general election and held the position of 'center.' She debuted as part of a unit in 2009 and later debuted as a solo singer in 2012.
Mayu Watanabe had not been active on social networking services (SNS) since her post on January 1, 2020, raising questions among fans. Notably, she also did not appear on a music show scheduled for February due to health issues.
The agency requested restraint regarding Mayu Watanabe's retirement, asking people not to make unfounded speculations.
