Dongjak-gu, Implements Safety Measures for the 65th Memorial Day Ceremony

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) is implementing a comprehensive plan for Memorial Day to ensure that visitors paying tribute at the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery can safely honor the patriotic martyrs on the occasion of the 65th Memorial Day.

The 65th Memorial Day ceremony held on the 6th will be significantly scaled down from the originally planned 10,000 attendees to about 500, including national veterans, their families, and key government officials, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Accordingly, the district has prioritized quarantine measures to protect visitors and prepared a comprehensive plan covering all areas such as cleaning, traffic, and environmental maintenance from the 1st to the 10th.

First, the Dongjak-gu quarantine task force will conduct sterilization and insecticide disinfection more than three times during the period using spray and fogging disinfectors, and will apply mosquito larvicide to 12 public restrooms.

Special hygiene management, including thorough cleaning and disinfection of contact facilities, will also be carried out at three public restrooms around the Memorial Cemetery (Memorial Cemetery, Parking Park, Isugyo Bridge).

On Memorial Day, three caretakers will be stationed to maintain cleanliness by replenishing supplies and other tasks.

Additionally, about 140 members of the district’s public interest activity groups will guide visitors around the cemetery and distribute beverages in a non-face-to-face, contactless manner to prevent COVID-19 infection.

In particular, the district has established a cooperative system with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to fully prepare for any symptomatic cases by supporting health personnel and ambulances for fever checks of ceremony attendees.

Furthermore, until the 10th, environmental maintenance around the Memorial Cemetery will be conducted, including illegal street vendor cleanup, road facility inspections, street tree and green area maintenance, traffic guidance, and parking order enforcement, along with a Taegeukgi flag-raising campaign to create a solemn atmosphere.

Lee Chang-woo, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, “We will do our best to ensure the safety and convenience of those visiting the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery on the 65th Memorial Day by thoroughly blocking the spread of COVID-19,” and added, “We ask everyone to take personal responsibility for quarantine and practice personal hygiene equivalent to social distancing to prevent and contain COVID-19.”
