Surveying Project for Public Reference Points at Core Sites of Buyeo Baekje Royal Capital

Surveying Project for Public Reference Points at Core Sites of Buyeo Baekje Royal Capital

The Cultural Heritage Administration and Buyeo County announced on the 1st that they will conduct a public benchmark point surveying project by September to establish a geographic information infrastructure for twelve key Baekje royal capital heritage sites. This is part of the government innovation task, the ‘Baekje Royal Capital Key Heritage Preservation and Management Project,’ aiming to build a system for systematic management and operation of excavation information.

The targeted sites are Busosanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 5), Garimseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 4), Neungsan-ri Tumuli Cluster (Historic Site No. 14), Gunsuri Temple Site (Historic Site No. 44), Naseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 58), Jeongnimsa Temple Site (Historic Site No. 301), Jeongam-ri Wayo Site (Historic Site No. 373), Neungan-gol Tumuli Cluster (Historic Site No. 420), Hwajisan Site (Historic Site No. 425), Wangheungsa Temple Site (Historic Site No. 427), Gwanbuk-ri Site (Historic Site No. 428), and the Gudeurae Area (Scenic Site No. 63).

In excavation investigations, surveying benchmark points based on standard coordinates are typically installed to record the exact locations of investigation sites, archaeological remains, and excavated artifacts. However, each investigating institution has installed its own benchmark points, causing difficulties in integrating regional information of excavated sites and digital mapping. To resolve this issue, the two organizations will integrate and install surveying benchmark points by region and heritage site.

The Cultural Heritage Administration stated, “Next year, we plan to promote public benchmark point surveying and installation projects for the Baekje royal capital key heritage sites in Gongju City and Iksan City as well,” adding, “Based on this, we will actively advance the database construction project for excavation data of the Baekje royal capital.”
