5236 New Domestic Job Types Added Over 8 Years... Which Jobs Disappeared?

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] It has been revealed that the number of job types in South Korea has increased by more than 5,000 over the past eight years.

The Korea Employment Information Service recently published the "Korean Occupational Dictionary Integrated Edition 5th Edition," which compiles Korean occupations based on workplace job surveys conducted from 2012 to 2019.

The Korean Occupational Dictionary is a representative occupational information book in South Korea, first published in 1986. Through this integrated 5th edition, changes in the occupational world, including newly emerging jobs and changes in existing job duties over the past eight years, can be confirmed.

The integrated 5th edition lists a total of 16,891 occupations, an increase of 5,236 compared to the 4th edition published in 2012. In particular, the 270 newly registered emerging occupations were mainly due to ▲ the advancement of science and technology such as the 4th Industrial Revolution ▲ demographic changes such as aging ▲ social environmental changes such as specialization ▲ institutional changes such as government policies.

With the advancement of digitalization and the 4th Industrial Revolution, new occupations such as big data specialists, blockchain developers, artificial intelligence engineers, drone pilots, and digital cultural heritage restoration specialists have appeared.

Due to demographic changes, new occupations such as heirloom organizers, pet behavior correction specialists, pet funeral directors, storage organizers, and pregnancy and childcare coaches were registered.

As a result of social environmental changes, new occupations such as breastfeeding specialists, crime victim counselors, forest healing guides, housing welfare workers, game translators, sports psychology counselors, and job experience managers have been newly listed.

Additionally, supported by government policies intertwined with social changes, occupations such as social economy activists, sustainable management specialists, startup planners, urban regeneration coordinators, rural tourism planners, and educational farm operators have been registered.

Eighteen occupations that have disappeared due to production discontinuation and technological advancements such as digitalization were removed from the dictionary. Occupations related to plasma display panel production, film subtitle production, film color correction technicians, and tennis racket manufacturing no longer have workers and were deleted from the Korean Occupational Dictionary.

Kim Jung-jin, a research fellow at the Employment Information Service, stated, "Over the past decade, digital technologies such as information and communication technology (ICT), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) appear to have greatly influenced the creation and decline of occupations, as well as changes in existing job duties. In the future occupational world, the ability to utilize digital technology and knowledge is expected to become very important."

Meanwhile, the Korean Occupational Dictionary Integrated Edition 5th Edition can be accessed on the Employment Information Service website.
