[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Park Hee-eun] Two students from Gachon University have tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). On the 31st, Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will conduct comprehensive testing on about 200 Gachon University students and staff who had contact with them.
Seongnam City instructed approximately 200 individuals, including fellow university students, professors, teaching assistants, and administrative staff whose paths overlapped on campus from the 25th to the 30th, to get tested for COVID-19 at the Sujeong-gu Public Health Center through phone calls and text messages. The two confirmed cases are third- and fourth-year students at Gachon University (Seongnam patients No. 133 and 134).
The confirmed students were identified as members of the Korea Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), a Protestant campus missionary organization.
Earlier, on the previous morning, a 29-year-old male CCC staff member living with the confirmed patients in a residence in Taepyeong 1-dong, Sujeong-gu near Gachon University, also tested positive for COVID-19.
The two confirmed students were classified as close contacts and underwent testing. Their infections were confirmed on the night of the 30th.
The CCC staff member was found to have had contact on the 25th at the CCC in Buam-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, with patient No. 14 (a 28-year-old male) from Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, who was confirmed positive on the 28th.
To prevent a cluster infection within the university, the Sujeong-gu Public Health Center plans to conduct proactive comprehensive testing before the epidemiological investigation is completed. Testing of about 200 people has been underway since the morning, and the results are expected late tonight.
Meanwhile, Gachon University held an emergency meeting this morning to discuss countermeasures, including changes to the class format.
