[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] The United States, the chair country of this year's Group of Seven (G7) summit, announced that it will postpone the G7 meeting to after September by inviting additional guest countries.
According to CNN on the 31st, U.S. President Donald Trump said to reporters on the 30th (local time) aboard his private plane returning from visiting the site of the first private manned spacecraft launch, "The G7 does not seem to represent well what is happening in the world. It is a very outdated group," and added, "The G7 meeting will be postponed to after September."
The G7 member countries are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan. President Trump added, "We will invite four additional countries: Russia, Australia, India, and Korea," suggesting that the G7 meeting will be held with an expanded number of participating countries.
Regarding this, White House Strategic Communications Director Alyssa Farah explained, "President Trump wants to include not only countries affected by COVID-19 but also other traditional allies, including the Five Eyes countries (United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand), in the G7 meeting to discuss the future of China."
The G7 summit was originally scheduled to be held next month. After the COVID-19 outbreak, the United States, which has initiated economic normalization measures, was planning to host the G7 summit next month in the U.S., with world economic leaders expected to attend the meeting.
