Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG Group, urged employees to embrace a bold culture of challenge.
On the 28th, Chairman Koo visited LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul, which marked its 2nd anniversary since its launch, and said, "Doing nothing and not daring to take on challenges can be seen as 'failure,'" adding, "Please create a bold culture of challenge unique to Science Park."
On the same day, Chairman Koo discussed the group's digital transformation (DX) and artificial intelligence (AI) promotion strategies and current status, as well as plans to secure outstanding talent.
The on-site visit was attended by CEO Koo Kwang-mo, Lee Samsu, CEO of LG Science Park, and key personnel responsible for DX, AI, big data, and open innovation strategies at LG Science Park.
Chairman Koo's call for a bold culture of challenge means not fearing failure, preparing ahead with innovative technologies such as digital transformation and AI that can provide new value to customers, and urging LG Science Park to find future seeds for the group and seize opportunities. It also signifies the importance of establishing a culture of openness, communication, and challenge to lead LG's innovation culture.
LG Science Park supports strengthening capabilities in DX and AI fields, leads group-wide 'digital innovation,' and serves as a hub for 'open innovation' by creating an innovation ecosystem where small and medium enterprises and startups can mutually benefit.
Accordingly, LG Electronics, LG Chem, and others have established dedicated DX organizations, accelerating digital transformation by converting over 90% of IT systems to the cloud, introducing work support robots, and adopting software standards.
LG Science Park applies the latest AI technologies to support solving challenges faced by affiliates where achieving results through traditional methods was difficult. It also actively fosters AI talent by training 100 AI masters annually and securing outstanding talent through hiring external experts.
Additionally, 11 startups are housed in the open research space 'Open Lab' within LG Science Park. These startups receive free office and research space for up to three years and can use advanced research equipment such as material analyzers and 3D printers at no cost.
An LG official explained, "Even amid the COVID-19 economic crisis, this was an occasion to discuss how to steadfastly perform LG Science Park's core role without shrinking back and prepare for the future."
Meanwhile, LG Science Park was the first business site Chairman Koo visited in September 2018, shortly after his inauguration in June of the same year.
