Samsung Display Wins 'Display of the Year' Award for Foldable Technology

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Display announced on the 28th that it has received the 'Display of the Year Award' from the Society for Information Display (SID), the world's largest display conference, for its foldable display.

The 'Display of the Year Award' is given by SID to the most innovative display product of the year, awarded to products released in the previous year.

Samsung Display has won the 'Display of the Year Award' for the fourth time this year, following the 5.68-inch flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) in 2014, the bent OLED in 2015, and the quad-bent flexible OLED in 2017.

SID explained the reason for the award by stating that Samsung Display's foldable display demonstrated the potential as a next-generation form factor. In particular, it praised Samsung Display for creating a foldable display through extensive efforts in materials, structure, and durability verification.

Samsung Display's foldable display was first applied to the Galaxy Fold as a foldable display that expands from 4.6 inches when folded to 7.3 inches when unfolded.

To ensure durability even after multiple folds in real usage environments, a plastic-based cover window was applied, and the material and physical structure and properties of each layer inside the panel were optimized.

Notably, it can be folded and unfolded finely with a 1.5R (1.5mm radius of curvature), creating an experience similar to opening a real book, providing users with a new mobile experience.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display has equipped the second foldable phone from Samsung Electronics, the Galaxy Z Flip, with a clam shell type foldable display that folds vertically. Instead of the existing plastic-based cover window, it features an ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) that is thin yet foldable, receiving positive responses from consumers worldwide.
