'Musica Tempus' Hosted... Showcasing Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Music from June 2 to 4
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The "3-Day Journey through Early Music," hosted by the early music specialist ensemble Musica Tempus, will be held as an online streaming concert every day at 8 PM from June 2 to 4.
This performance was selected for the "2020 COVID-19 Emergency Arts Support Project," sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and will be held at Senacle, a recording studio located in Yangjae-dong.
The "3-Day Journey through Early Music" is a special event where audiences can experience three ensembles performing in the most authentic manner possible, featuring instruments and performance techniques from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, which are the roots of modern Western music. Yoon Hyun-jong, the representative of Musica Tempus and a former radio host for Gugak Broadcasting, will provide live commentary and Q&A sessions alongside the performances. Representative Yoon plans to communicate in real time to help the audience (viewers) easily understand how instruments and music evolved and were passed down through each era.
On June 2, Musica Tempus, responsible for Medieval music, will perform. Founded in 2017, Musica Tempus is a specialized ensemble for Medieval and Renaissance music, composed of rare Medieval European instruments in Korea such as recorders, theorbo, saz, hurdy-gurdy, and Middle Eastern percussion instruments.
On June 3, Ensemble Melik will present Renaissance music. Ensemble Melik specializes in music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The name "Melik" means "poem of the Greek era" and also carries the French meaning of "lyrical." Through their music, Ensemble Melik aims to express and convey inner emotions and sentiments as if speaking. In this performance, they will feature a recorder trio along with early instruments such as the dulcian and theorbo to present consort music from the English and Italian Renaissance periods.
On June 4, Confrerie Musica, responsible for Baroque music, will perform. Confrerie Musica is an ensemble that pursues "historically informed performance" based on historical evidence from the period, using period instruments such as the gut string and 18th-century bows. The group was formed by musicians who studied early music together in the Netherlands. In this concert, they will showcase the essence of Baroque music with works by the three great Baroque composers known as the "Three Bs": Buxtehude, Biber, and Bach.
The "3-Day Journey through Early Music" will be broadcast live via the Senacle studio's YouTube channel, and the recorded footage will be edited and posted afterward.
