[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that the Gokseong Seomjingang Astronomical Observatory, which was temporarily closed due to COVID-19, will gradually resume operations starting from the 26th.
To this end, the observatory will strictly adhere to social distancing guidelines by limiting the number of visitors to within half of the observatory's capacity.
Visitors must undergo a temperature check and fill out a visitor log before entering, and seats in the planetarium will be spaced apart. Additionally, various operational methods will be introduced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and minimize visitor inconvenience.
During the temporary closure, the Gokseong Seomjingang Astronomical Observatory renovated its facilities to provide a more satisfying astronomical experience. This includes improvements to observation equipment, interior and exterior repairs, and the establishment and enhancement of various experience programs to offer visitors an unforgettable scientific experience. Furthermore, the observatory is currently promoting the "Regional Science Museum Exhibition Improvement Support Project" conducted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, aiming to complete it in the second half of the year.
Equipped with a 600mm large telescope developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the Gokseong Seomjingang Astronomical Observatory boasts superior observation precision and clarity compared to other regions, thanks to the clean natural environment along the Seomjingang River. It has contributed to expanding the base of astronomical science culture and generating tourism demand in Gokseong-gun through various scientific events and regular observation programs.
Nearby, there are various attractions that Gokseong-gun is proud of, such as the Seomjingang Train Village, making it even more enjoyable. Especially in May and June, hundreds of millions of roses of 1,004 varieties bloom in the rose garden within the Train Village, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the late spring atmosphere. The rail bike, which offers a vivid experience of the Seomjingang scenery, is also worth noting.
