Gwangju City Selected for 3 Locations in Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Life-Integrated Smart Technology Support Project' Competition Gwangju City Hall

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 19th that three locations, including the Dongmyeong-dong Smart Fire Alarm Service in Dong-gu, have been selected for this year's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's new pilot project, the ‘Living-closely Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support Project,’ securing an additional 1.26 billion KRW in national funding.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport secured a budget of 8.5 billion KRW this year to support smart technologies that are highly perceptible and easy to commercialize, aiming to efficiently solve problems in declining areas and restore residential conditions in vulnerable regions within a short period. Last month, applications were invited from local governments, and after document and presentation evaluations, 16 locations nationwide were selected.

The selected projects in Gwangju include: ▲ Establishing a smart fire alarm system within the Dongmyeong-dong residential support-type urban regeneration New Deal project site selected in 2018 to create a fire-safe village ▲ Building an ICT-based integration platform to solve language barrier issues for immigrants including Koreans from Central Asia in the Wolgok-dong general neighborhood-type urban regeneration New Deal project site selected in 2019 in Gwangsan-gu ▲ Providing a smart shared parking service to solve parking, a major urban problem, within the university town-type urban regeneration New Deal project site selected in 2018 in Buk-gu.

The ‘Living-closely Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support Project’ offers a maximum national subsidy of 500 million KRW, with a project period of one year, applying smart technology to solve urban problems within the respective areas.

With the additional national funding of 1.26 billion KRW secured through this selection on top of the previously secured urban regeneration New Deal project funds for each project, Gwangju City plans to provide smart services in four core areas: safety, transportation, energy/environment, and living/welfare, thereby accelerating project implementation.

Lee Sang-bae, Director of the Urban Regeneration Bureau of the city, said, “Through the selected Living-closely Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support Project, we expect to apply smart solutions with high resident perception to solve local problems and enhance the effects of the New Deal projects. We will manage the projects thoroughly to ensure that the urban regeneration projects in Gwangju are truly felt by the residents.”
