[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suwan] Former President Park Geun-hye’s former Liberty Korea Party Supreme Council member Ryu Yeo-hae has demanded a suspension of Park’s sentence execution after news broke that a COVID-19 case was confirmed at Seoul Detention Center, where the former president is incarcerated.

On the 15th, former Supreme Council member Ryu stated on her Facebook, "A correctional officer at Seoul Detention Center tested positive for COVID-19. It is dangerous. Suspend President Park Geun-hye’s sentence execution."

Earlier, correctional officer A at Seoul Detention Center was confirmed positive for COVID-19 the previous day. Approximately 270 close contacts, including correctional officers and inmates, were identified. All correctional officers tested negative. Specimen testing for inmates is scheduled to be conducted on the same day.

Officer A was confirmed to have been infected after attending an acquaintance’s wedding held on the 9th in Changwon, Gyeongnam. It was confirmed that one of the friends who accompanied him used a coin karaoke room in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, which a confirmed COVID-19 patient had visited.

After attending the wedding, Officer A worked for three days from the 11th to the 13th, coming into contact with 254 inmates and 23 staff members, totaling 277 people.

Officer A was responsible for escorting inmates when visitors such as lawyers came to the detention center.

Meanwhile, former President Park has been incarcerated at Seoul Detention Center since her arrest in March 2017. It is currently unknown whether she is included among the close contacts.
