Songpa-gu, Food Waste Metered Bin Cleaning

680 RFID Volume-Based Waste Meters in Residential Areas, High-Pressure Steam Cleaning Twice a Month

Songpa-gu, Food Waste Metered Bin Cleaning

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seongsu) will intensively manage the cleaning and maintenance of food waste RFID volume-based meters (hereinafter ‘RFID meters’) installed in general residential areas.

During the hot summer season, there are concerns about odors and pests caused by residues remaining inside and outside the RFID meters during the food waste disposal and collection process.

In particular, general residential houses require more support for cleaning and maintenance since there is no manager, unlike apartment complexes.

Accordingly, Songpa-gu has contracted with a professional cleaning company to clean all 680 RFID meters installed in general residential areas within the district twice a month until December.

A 1-ton truck equipped with high-pressure steam cleaning equipment and two professional personnel will be deployed. They plan to thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the RFID meters and the input ports by spraying high-pressure steam and EM (Effective Microorganisms) fermentation solution to remove various residues and grease.

The district is also making efforts to maintain the cleanliness of RFID meters in general residential areas through public work personnel on a regular basis. Additionally, EM fermentation solution, which is useful for reducing odors and repelling pests, is supplied free of charge through EM dispensers installed at each neighborhood community center to encourage its use when disposing of food waste.

Furthermore, since 2015, the district has completed the installation of RFID meters in all apartment complexes within the area and has expanded support for installation and cleaning management to general residential houses.

The district plans to install an additional 70 units in the first half of this year to take the lead in implementing the food waste volume-based system.

Park Seongsu, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “We will do our best to carefully maintain the cleanliness of RFID meters to resolve inconveniences for residents and create a clean and livable city, Songpa.”
