A Magnitude 2.8 Earthquake Occurs Northeast of Wanju, Jeonbuk...

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyung] An earthquake occurred in Wanju, Jeonbuk, for the first time in over five years.

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that an earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred around 3:19 PM on the 13th, 27 km northeast of Wanju-gun.

The epicenter was located at 36.10 degrees north latitude and 127.34 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 12 km.

The maximum instrumental intensities recorded by observation equipment in each region were 3 in Daejeon, Jeonbuk, and Chungnam, and 2 in Chungbuk.

An intensity of 3 means that people on the upper floors of buildings noticeably feel the shaking and stationary cars shake slightly, while an intensity of 2 means only a few people on the upper floors or in quiet conditions can detect the earthquake.

A Korea Meteorological Administration official stated, "It has been 5 years and 5 months since an earthquake of magnitude 2.0 or higher, the notification standard of the KMA, occurred in Wanju (magnitude 2.1 on December 24, 2014)," adding, "Nearby areas to the earthquake's occurrence can feel the tremors."
