[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Andong City in Gyeongbuk announced on the 13th that it will actively expand sports and cultural facilities, including creating a comprehensive sports town around the Citizen Sports Complex.

On 215,010㎡ around Andong Citizen Sports Complex, the city plans to build a Class 1 certified stadium capable of hosting the National Sports Festival, as well as an indoor exclusive stadium, a warm-up field, and a Ssireum (Korean wrestling) arena, aiming for completion by 2030. This project, to be promoted through national and provincial government grant programs, will require 110 billion KRW.

According to Andong City's plan, the former airfield site in Yongsang-dong will be transformed into a multipurpose gymnasium by 2023 with an investment of 9 billion KRW. The gymnasium will be a two-story building with a total floor area of 3,106㎡, including a children's fitness area, group exercise spaces, and an outdoor playground for children. Andong City has completed the basic and detailed designs for these projects and has applied for national and provincial government grants to secure funding.

Other projects, such as the Jeongha-dong 'Bandabi Sports Center' combining the living SOC project selected last year in a national grant program with school facilities, the Eogagol artificial turf soccer field construction, and the renovation of the Citizen Tennis Courts, will also begin construction soon.

The Bandabi Sports Center for the disabled, to be built near Jeongha-dong Citizen Sports Complex, is expected to be completed in 2022 with a budget of 9 billion KRW. The center will include a fitness center, rehabilitation training room, and a lawn bowling field (a game played by rolling a disc-shaped ball on grass).

Additionally, with an investment of 1.3 billion KRW, an 'Extreme Park (X-Game)' for youth will be installed inside the Andong Youth Training Center, and night lighting facilities at Eogagol Soccer Field and Pungsan Sports Park will be completed this year. The Eogagol artificial turf soccer field will also be renovated with a budget of 800 million KRW, including 200 million KRW from provincial funds.

An Andong City official expressed strong enthusiasm, saying, "Once COVID-19 ends, we will actively attract international and national competitions by utilizing the sports infrastructure we have built so far, thereby accelerating the revitalization of the local economy."
