Gwangju Dongbu Office of Education, Full Effort to Support Youth


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Eastern Education Support Office is putting all its efforts into promoting the healthy growth and development of youth.


According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education on the 12th, the Eastern Education Support Office held the "2020 1st School Crisis Management Support System Operation Council" on the 11th.


Based on the "Act on Suicide Prevention and the Creation of a Culture Respecting Life" and the Eastern Education's major task of "Strengthening Life Respect Education," discussions were held to cultivate a life-respecting awareness appropriate to the students' developmental stages.


Practical discussions took place on strengthening suicide prevention education, early detection of students' suicide signs and linking them to professional institutions for healing and support, the Eastern Emergency Response Team for crisis management, and effective operation plans to support school crisis management.


The 2020 School Crisis Management Support System Operation Committee of the Eastern Education Support Office consists of five external members: ▲ Na Kyungsoo, Head of the Women and Youth Division at the Eastern Police Station ▲ Song Hoseong, Head of the Women and Youth Division at the Northern Police Station ▲ Yoon Bomi, Team Leader at Dong-gu Mental Health Welfare Center ▲ Ban Dahye, Team Leader at Buk-gu Mental Health Welfare Center ▲ Lee Sung, Deputy Director at Gwangju Metropolitan Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, along with a total of 19 members including the Director of the Education Support Bureau of the Eastern Education Support Office, the Head of Democratic Citizenship Education Support Division, supervisors, professional counselors, and advisory lawyers.


The committee members emphasized the importance of close cooperation among related organizations in student crisis management situations and sought ways to cultivate practical response capabilities through "mock drills" for crisis situations.


They also discussed various approaches to life respect education in response to changes in the school environment, such as the prolonged online classes.


The Eastern Education Support Office plans to conduct training for teachers to enhance their ability to detect signs of student suicide and improve crisis response capabilities to strengthen school crisis management capacity.


They intend to systematically support and operate roles such as gatekeepers among school members, life-loving night walks and life respect campaigns to foster a city-wide culture of respecting life, and life respect education programs visiting schools.


Choi Dongrim, Director of the Education Support Bureau at the Eastern Education Support Office, said, "We will strengthen the educational governance of local specialized and related organizations for prompt and active response and continuous management of crisis situations," and added, "We ask for a pivotal role in establishing a solid crisis management response system for students to realize happy education that does not miss a single child."
