How Will Traffic Accident Analysis Change in the 'Autonomous Driving Era'... Police-Based Research Begins

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police have begun laying the groundwork for analyzing traffic accidents that will change with the advent of the 'autonomous vehicle' era, known as the 'flower' of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The Police University Institute of Security Policy announced on the 10th that it will start foundational research for the 'Establishment of an Autonomous Vehicle Traffic Accident Analysis Center.'

According to the government's 'Future Automobile Industry Development Strategy,' the commercialization timeline for fully autonomous vehicles (Level 4) is expected to be accelerated from 2030 to 2027. Additionally, partial autonomous vehicles equipped with 'car maintenance' functions may be available for sale as early as the second half of this year. Consequently, significant changes are inevitable in the police's core duties of 'traffic accident investigation and analysis.'

Accordingly, the police have decided to conduct research related to ▲'Establishment of an Autonomous Vehicle Traffic Center' foundation, including studies on traffic accident analysis processes in the autonomous driving era ▲development plans linked with regional police agencies' 'Traffic Accident Engineering Analysis Offices' ▲investigation of overseas cases in autonomous vehicle traffic accident investigations ▲cases of independent government agencies specializing in detailed traffic accident analysis overseas ▲and the establishment of the National Police Agency's autonomous driving policy and technical support system.

This research is expected to provide direction for redefining the police's role in the autonomous driving era, including reducing traffic accidents, supporting vulnerable road users, alleviating traffic congestion, preparing safety measures, improving traffic operation systems, and investigating and analyzing traffic accidents.

The Institute of Security Policy stated, "We will continue to proactively prepare for the changing traffic environment through multifaceted research related to autonomous vehicles, including signal control and safety systems, driver's licenses and traffic accidents, traffic infrastructure, and legislative improvements."
