[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) worldwide has surpassed 4 million.

According to the global statistics site Worldometer as of 7 a.m. (Korean time) on the 9th, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide is 4,006,511. This is about four months since China reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 31 of last year.

The United States had the highest number of confirmed cases at 1,318,787. This was followed by Spain (260,000), Italy (210,000), the United Kingdom (210,000), Russia (180,000), France (170,000), Germany (170,000), Brazil (140,000), Turkey (130,000), and Iran (100,000).

China, known as the epicenter of COVID-19, had about 80,000 confirmed cases, ranking 11th in the world. South Korea ranked 38th. South Korea initially held second place after China during the early spread of COVID-19, but due to early proactive diagnostic testing and effective treatment, it fell outside the top 30.

Currently, there are 41 countries with more than 10,000 confirmed cases. The total number of deaths is 275,703, approaching 300,000. The United States had the highest number of deaths at about 78,000, followed by the United Kingdom (310,000), Italy (300,000), Spain (260,000), and France (260,000).
