[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The autonomous driving technology development innovation project, with an investment of 1.0974 trillion KRW, has passed the preliminary feasibility study.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 28th that the autonomous driving technology development innovation project, jointly promoted by four ministries including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National Police Agency, has passed the preliminary feasibility study and will be actively pursued.
Following the preliminary feasibility approval of the eco-friendly vehicle R&D project in March last year, the large-scale R&D project in the autonomous vehicle sector has also passed the preliminary feasibility study, completing a mid- to long-term comprehensive development strategy for future vehicles, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
This project will be implemented over seven years from 2021 to 2027, with a total investment of 1.0974 trillion KRW. The goal is to foster the autonomous driving convergence new industry by developing convergence new technologies and services in automobile-ICT-road traffic, improving laws and systems, standardization, and establishing a convergence ecosystem foundation.
Accordingly, 84 detailed tasks will be carried out across five fields: vehicle convergence new technology, ICT convergence new technology, road traffic convergence new technology, autonomous driving services, and autonomous driving ecosystem.
The most notable feature of this project is that it is a cross-ministerial project based on close cooperation among the four ministries. A ‘ministry matching-type new cooperation model’ will be applied to strengthen collaboration without barriers at all stages including planning, budgeting, and execution between ministries.
It provides a comprehensive package-type support that includes not only core technology development, infrastructure, demonstration, and services in the autonomous vehicle sector but also standardization, laws, and systems.
It is expected to resolve investment inefficiencies caused by fragmented and competitive project promotion among ministries and to enhance project outcomes through the establishment of a practical cooperative system between ministries.
The four ministries plan to focus on five areas?vehicle convergence new technology, ICT convergence new technology, road traffic convergence new technology, service creation, and ecosystem construction?to complete a world-class convergence-level 4 fully autonomous driving foundation through this project.
Vehicle convergence new technology will be developed to achieve a zero-accident autonomous driving system by developing video recognition and processing technology, vehicle platform technology, and evaluation technology for vehicle parts and systems.
To enhance the safety and intelligence of autonomous driving, ICT convergence new technology including data processing, vehicle communication and security, and autonomous driving AI software will be developed using a ‘vehicle-edge-cloud’ structure.
Road traffic convergence new technology will be developed to secure safe autonomous driving technology by linking traffic infrastructure information such as roads and traffic safety facilities with autonomous driving technology.
Autonomous driving services such as creating new industries in public transportation autonomous driving and supporting mobility for vulnerable groups will be developed.
To complete the autonomous driving ecosystem foundation, safety evaluation technology development and standardization foundation will be secured, and laws and systems will be improved to support this, thereby supporting the construction of the autonomous driving ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the four ministries plan to institutionalize the cross-ministerial consultative body and establish and operate an ‘Autonomous Driving Convergence Project Group (tentative name)’ for efficient integrated project management.
