[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 10th, the Minsheng Party launched a fierce attack on Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party. At the Minsheng Party Central Election Countermeasures Committee meeting that day, a flood of criticisms targeting Ahn were made, including “Is this the election for the president of the Solo Running Association?”, “Reactionary conservative politician,” and “The worst political show.”
Son Hak-kyu, Standing Election Committee Chairman, responded to Ahn’s statement that “the People’s Party made a great decision to give up district nominations in response to requests not to split opposition votes” by saying, “(Ahn) has revealed his true conservative colors,” calling it “an explicit expression of an opposition alliance with the United Future Party.” He added, “Now it is clear to all that the Ahn Cheol-soo Party is a satellite proportional representation party of the United Future Party. Ultimately, it will be absorbed and merged into the United Future Party. We must never give votes to the Ahn Cheol-soo Party, which is reverting to a two-party system.”
Son also criticized the People’s Party, saying, “Is a party that does not field district candidates but only proportional representation candidates in the National Assembly election a democratic party? It is a direct denial of parliamentary democracy.”
Son said, “Ahn himself is running solo while asking the people for votes,” adding, “Marathon is a sport where many people run together. If this were an election for the president of the Solo Running Association, it might be understandable, but he is running solo and asking for votes in an election that has nothing to do with running alone. Isn’t this a complete comedy?”

Kim Jeong-hwa, Co-Chair of the Election Committee, criticized Ahn’s announcement of a “special statement against populism and on the urgent disaster relief policy,” saying, “(Ahn) says that the disaster recovery party should have ‘selective support’ as a principle,” adding, “This appears to be concern for the country on the surface, but in reality, it is merely a propaganda strategy to politically exploit the situation and seek support from conservative voters.”
Kim said, “Opposing urgent measures to save people’s livelihoods by bringing in political logic is nothing but the ‘old-fashioned politics’ we have seen countless times,” and criticized, “It is deplorable that Ahn’s perception of the situation involves political logic even in urgent disaster countermeasures. It is no different from declaring himself a reactionary conservative politician.”
Kim added, “What the people want is Dr. Ahn Cheol-soo, not the conservative presidential candidate Ahn Cheol-soo,” and said, “Instead of leisurely running a marathon and discussing politics in front of the critical condition of our people’s livelihoods in the intensive care unit, I hope he returns to Daegu and treats even one more fellow citizen.”
Jang Jeong-sook, Co-Chair of the Election Committee, pointed out, “(Ahn) criticized other parties’ political shows, but isn’t the running performance itself the worst political show?” adding, “It is hard not to laugh.”
Jang said, “It is bitter to see the endless downfall of a politician who once shouted for ‘new politics,’” and added, “Please stop the comedy. It is shameful as a fellow politician.”
