KOSPI and KOSDAQ Repeat Fluctuations Around Steady Range in Early Trading Session

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets are repeating fluctuations around the flat zone in the early session.

On the 10th, the KOSPI opened at 1835.65, down 0.45 points (0.02%) from the previous trading day. The KOSPI, which started lower, is showing mixed trends, fluctuating around the 1830 level in the early session. As of 9:25 AM, it is recording 1840.42, up 4.21 points (0.23%) from the previous day.

The previous day, the KOSPI closed at 1836.21, up 1.61% from the previous trading day, influenced by the strong U.S. stock market. The U.S. stock market showed strength due to a sharp rise in international oil prices and news of Senator Bernie Sanders' withdrawal from the Democratic primary, which led to continued buying by individuals and pushed the index higher. Expectations of an agreement ahead of the OPEC+ production cut meeting had a positive effect, and although the Bank of Korea kept interest rates unchanged, its somewhat dovish stance was also favorably reflected.

Overnight, major indices on the New York Stock Exchange rose, supported by the Federal Reserve's announcement of a $2.3 trillion stimulus package. On the 9th (Eastern Time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,719.37, up 285.80 points (1.22%) from the previous day on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index rose 39.84 points (1.45%) to 2,789.82, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq closed at 8,153.58, up 62.67 points (0.77%).

Looking at trading trends by participant, individual and foreign investors are net buyers of 128.4 billion KRW and 20.9 billion KRW, respectively. In contrast, institutional investors are net sellers of 150.4 billion KRW.

By sector, steel & metals, insurance, and pharmaceuticals are rising, while food & beverages, paper & wood, and chemicals are falling.

Among the top market capitalization stocks, POSCO, Samsung Biologics, Hyundai Motor, and Hyundai Mobis are rising. On the other hand, LG Household & Health Care, SK Hynix, NAVER, and Samsung SDI are declining.

Currently, in the KOSPI market, 366 stocks are rising without any hitting the upper limit, 435 stocks are falling without any hitting the lower limit, and 87 stocks are unchanged.

The KOSDAQ index is also moving around the flat zone. The KOSDAQ index opened at 617.75, up 1.80 points (0.29%) from the previous trading day, but soon turned downward, showing slight weakness in the early session. As of 9:25 AM, it is recording 616.04, up 0.09 points (0.01%) from the previous day.

Looking at supply and demand, foreign and institutional investors are net sellers of 32.7 billion KRW and 37.8 billion KRW, respectively. In contrast, individual investors are net buyers of 75.7 billion KRW.

By sector, other services, publishing & media replication, and telecommunications services are rising, while textiles & apparel, paper & wood, and semiconductors are falling.

Among the top market capitalization stocks, Genexine is showing a sharp rise, and Celltrion Pharm and Studio Dragon are also rising. On the other hand, SK Materials, Seegene, Komipharm, and HLB are declining.

Currently, in the KOSDAQ market, including one stock hitting the upper limit, 483 stocks are rising, 718 stocks are falling without any hitting the lower limit, and 106 stocks are unchanged.
