Dongjak-gu Creates 10 Smart Pedestrian Paths Safe for Children

Following last year's installation at Daerim Elementary School's smart pedestrian path, by August, 10 school zones in the area will be equipped with smart displays for speed warnings, wireless arrival/departure time alerts, and more, with a project budget of 230 million KRW.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) will establish smart pedestrian paths safe for children in 10 school zones within the district by August.

This project was prepared to prevent traffic accidents involving children with weak attention spans in advance by utilizing the latest smart technologies.

First, last year, the district formed the Daerim Elementary School residents' council 'Dodam Dodam School Road Research Institute,' where about 940 students and their parents directly participated from identifying issues related to children's traffic safety to proposing solutions, establishing smart pedestrian paths in seven surrounding school routes.

Comparative analysis before and after the installation showed that the average vehicle speed during school commute times decreased by 2 to 5 km/h.

In particular, the speed limit in high-risk child traffic accident areas was reduced to below 20 km/h.

This year, until February, the district conducted a demand survey for smart pedestrian paths targeting elementary schools in the area through voluntary participation of schools and parents, and on the 6th, selected the final target sites together with Dongjak Police Station.

The project sites include a total of 10 school zones at 8 schools: Noryangjin Elementary School, Heukseok Elementary School, Yeonghwa Elementary School, Yeongbon Elementary School, Eunro Elementary School, Gangnam Elementary School, Dongjak Elementary School, and the front and back gates of Boramae Elementary School, as well as in front of the Dongjak-gu Citizens Sports Center.

The district plans to invest a total project cost of 230 million KRW to establish smart services tailored to the characteristics of the project sites, such as ▲speed warning smart displays ▲smart vehicle approach alerts ▲wireless school commute time alerts ▲smart intersection alerts.

Additionally, in cooperation with specialized institutions, the project will be evaluated using performance indicators such as average vehicle speed before and after installation and compliance rates of drivers and pedestrians with signals, and feedback on the project will be conducted through surveys on residents' satisfaction and perceived safety.

Han Dae-hee, head of the Traffic Administration Division, said, “We will do our best to create a safe pedestrian path by combining children's walking characteristics, residents' opinions, and the latest smart technologies to realize a safe city with zero child traffic accidents.”
