[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeong Cheol-hee, candidate for the by-election for Hampyeong County Governor in Jeonnam, urged the Election Commission and judicial authorities to "help Hampyeong County shed its notorious reputation as a habitual vote-buying area."
In a press release on the 9th, candidate Jeong stated, "There are widespread rumors that some candidates running in the Hampyeong County Governor by-election distributed cash to residents of certain local villages," and added, "I request that the truth be promptly investigated and reported."
He continued, "The previous county governor was punished for providing money and goods, and during the 2018 local elections, county governor candidates were also penalized for violating election laws by offering money and goods," emphasizing, "Hampyeong County must no longer bear the stigma of vote-buying whenever elections occur."
He further said, "The area where cash was distributed is Haechang Village, and the timing is rumored to be in early April, but there has been no action from the Election Commission," adding, "The Election Commission should conduct a thorough investigation to prevent vote-buying from recurring."
