[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The United Future Party proposed providing a special disaster scholarship of 1 million won per person to all university and graduate students.
On the 9th, Kim Jong-in, the General Election Committee Chairman of the United Future Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly and said, "We understand the heartfelt desire of university students who work hard at part-time jobs to help pay their tuition fees, and to ease their burden even a little, the government should immediately provide a special disaster scholarship of 1 million won per person to all university and graduate students nationwide." He added, "I hope this will be implemented immediately so that their worries can be alleviated even a little."
Regarding the funding plan, he said, "If the government allocates from the Ministry of Education's budget, it is definitely possible." Shin Se-don, co-chairman of the election committee, said, "If we consider the total number of university and graduate students to be about 2 million, the budget would be around 2 trillion won," and added, "If there is sufficient will, there is no major difficulty in securing the funds. If the president invokes the emergency financial order, the payment can be made quickly."
Chairman Kim also emphasized during a support campaign in Eunpyeong District, Seoul, "People say the current economic situation is more difficult than during the IMF (International Monetary Fund) bailout," and added, "Nevertheless, the government has no measures. The role of government finances is the most important."
