The Basic Plan for Phase 4 of Seoul Metro Line 9 Passed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Construction Begins... Four New Stations Added on the 4.12 km Section from Jungangbohun Station to Godeokgangil, Dramatically Improving Transportation Convenience
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] The Phase 4 project of Seoul Subway Line 9, which will connect Gangdong to Gangnam within 30 minutes, is set to be actively promoted.
Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that following the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s confirmation of the project budget at 640.8 billion KRW last month, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the basic plan on the 8th, officially kicking off the project.
The Phase 4 extension of Subway Line 9 is a project to build four new stations along a 4.12 km section from Jungang Veterans Hospital Station in Gangdong-gu, passing through Gildong Ecological Park, Hanyoung High School, and Line 5’s Godeok Station, to Godeok Gangil 1 District.
Since the groundbreaking of Phase 4 of Line 9, a long-awaited project by residents, has become visible, the district is moving swiftly to establish the transportation infrastructure in a timely manner. They plan to promptly proceed with follow-up procedures such as basic and detailed designs and actively consult with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The project aims for completion in 2027.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “The Phase 4 project of Line 9, which will enable access from Godeok Gangil to Gangnam within 30 minutes, is being fully launched. Knowing that this is thanks to the unwavering interest and support of our residents, we will strive harder to build solid transportation infrastructure, including the extension projects of Lines 5 and 8 and attracting the metropolitan wide express railway ‘GTX-D,’ and work to provide innovative transportation welfare to our residents.”
The Phase 4 extension project of Line 9 began when the district proactively requested transportation measures following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s announcement of candidate sites for the public housing district in 2011. It was included in the Ministry’s Godeok-Gangil public housing district metropolitan transportation improvement plan in 2012, reflected in Seoul’s 10-year urban railway network construction basic plan in 2015, passed the preliminary feasibility study in 2018, and led to the establishment of the basic plan (draft) in 2019.
Whenever the project faced delays, the district held multiple meetings with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister of Economy and Finance, and the Mayor of Seoul to urge prompt progress. Additionally, a signature campaign launched in December last year gathered the earnest wishes of over 30,000 residents, laying the groundwork for advancing the project.
