[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] It is reported that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was transferred to an intensive care unit due to worsening symptoms of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), is not using a ventilator.

According to local media on the 7th, Michael Gove, the UK Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, explained in an interview, "Prime Minister Johnson is not on a ventilator. Although he has received oxygen supply, he is in the intensive care unit to receive all necessary support."

Earlier, Johnson was the first major world leader to announce his COVID-19 diagnosis on the 27th of last month and entered self-isolation. When his symptoms, including a persistent fever, did not improve for about ten days, he was eventually admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in London on the evening of Sunday, the 5th. After his condition worsened again, he was moved to the intensive care unit around 7 p.m. the previous evening.

Chancellor Gove also stated that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been clearly designated by Johnson to deputize for his duties.

He urged the public, saying, "As can be seen in the Prime Minister's case, the disease can affect anyone very severely," and emphasized, "People must follow the recommended lockdown measures."
