[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The daughter of former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who went missing while canoeing in Chesapeake Bay on the U.S. East Coast, was found dead four days after her disappearance.
According to NBC News on the 6th (local time), the Maryland police announced that they recovered the body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean (40), the daughter of former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen.
It has been four days since Maeve McKean went missing on the afternoon of the 2nd along with her son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean (8).
The diving rescue team found Maeve McKean's body at around 5:31 p.m. that day at a depth of 7.62 meters underwater, about 4 km south of former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen's residence. However, the body of her son, who went missing with her, has not yet been found.
Maeve McKean and her son went missing while visiting former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen's home. While playing 공기놀이 (a traditional Korean ball game) with family, they got into a canoe to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the water, but due to worsening weather conditions, they were unable to return to shore.
Former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen is the eldest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, who served as U.S. Attorney General, and the niece of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.
The politically prominent Kennedy family has once again drawn attention from the U.S. media due to this canoeing disappearance incident. The so-called "Kennedy family curse" refers to the multiple tragic accidents in which family members have lost their lives.
President Kennedy was assassinated by a gunshot while in office in 1963, and his brother, former Attorney General Robert Kennedy, was assassinated during his 1968 Democratic presidential primary campaign.
Additionally, the son and daughter-in-law of former President Kennedy died in a plane crash in 1999.
Robert Kennedy's fourth son, David, was found dead from a drug overdose in a Florida hotel in 1984, and his sixth son, Michael, died in a skiing accident in Colorado in 1997.
Last August, Robert Kennedy's granddaughter, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, died at the age of 22 from a drug overdose.
