Schedule Adjusted Due to COVID-19 Impact: PGA Championship Moved to August, US Open to September
[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] The 'Masters Tournament' has been postponed again.
The organizer, Augusta National, announced on the 7th (Korean time) that the event will be postponed to November. The Masters, originally scheduled to be held on the 9th at Augusta National in Georgia, USA, was delayed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then it was decided to open on November 12 at the same location due to the global spread of the infectious disease. Holding the tournament at a time other than April is the first time in 86 years since the inaugural event in March 1934.
The 'oldest major,' The Open Championship, was ultimately canceled due to the impact of COVID-19. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) explained that it was "a decision for everyone's health." The Open was canceled for the first time in 75 years since 1945, when it was disrupted by World War II. The 149th Open, originally scheduled to be held this year at Royal St George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England, will be held next year, and the 150th Open in 2021 will be postponed to 2022 and played at the Old Course at St Andrews.
The May PGA Championship was rescheduled to August 6, and the US Open, originally set to start in June, was moved to September 17. The Ryder Cup, the intercontinental golf competition between the United States and the European Union, will take place on September 25. The PGA Tour plans to resume the season with the Charles Schwab Challenge starting on May 21, but there is a high possibility of changes due to COVID-19. The European Tour's next event is the BMW International Open on June 25, and the LPGA Tour's next event is the Arkansas Championship on June 19.
