[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Spain appears to be gradually subsiding. The number of new confirmed cases has shown the lowest figures in the past two weeks, and the number of deaths also recorded the lowest since the 24th of last month.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health's tally on the 6th (local time), the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Spain reached 135,032. This is the second highest number after the United States, which has 336,851 confirmed cases worldwide.
However, the daily new confirmed cases stood at 4,273, the lowest in the past two weeks. The incidence rate of new cases also dropped to 3.3%. The number of recovered patients exceeded 40,000, approaching about 30% of the total confirmed cases.
The cumulative death toll from COVID-19 reached 13,055, an increase of 637 from the previous day. This figure is lower than the 674 deaths reported on the 5th, marking the lowest since the 24th of last month.
Maria Jose Sierra, Director of the Disease Control Bureau, explained, "These statistics confirm the previously observed downward stabilization trend."
According to AFP news agency, as the COVID-19 situation in Spain gradually enters a stable phase, the Spanish government is considering gradually easing the nationwide movement restrictions and store closure orders set until the 25th. The government is also weighing the option of mandating mask-wearing for everyone in public places to prevent the spread of the virus.
