[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] In the upcoming general election, Lee Nak-yeon, chairman of the Democratic Party's COVID-19 National Crisis Response Committee, and Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the United Future Party, held their first one-on-one debate on the 6th.
Chairman Lee and Leader Hwang attended a debate hosted by the Jongno District Election Broadcasting Debate Committee at the T-Broad Broadcasting Gangseo Production Center in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the same day, where they discussed responses to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and economic issues.
Leader Hwang stated, "Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, more than 10,000 confirmed cases have occurred, and there have been 183 casualties (deaths). This result came about because of the initial failure in quarantine measures," adding, "Although the speed of confirmed cases is slowing due to the efforts of medical staff and volunteers, the credit belongs entirely to the medical personnel and citizens. The government should not take the credit."
Chairman Lee countered, "During the COVID-19 response process, global media and leaders of various countries have praised Korea. Many foreign media outlets evaluate that Korea's transparent and open democracy has produced good results," and added, "The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that Korea's quarantine measures are textbook examples."
He continued, "If the government has shortcomings, it should naturally reflect and improve, but if there are things done well thanks to the people, those should be properly acknowledged," and "Regarding the economic and social shocks caused by COVID-19 and how to allocate funds for quarantine, Candidate Hwang and his party have been inconsistent," he counterattacked. In response, Leader Hwang said, "My position and that of our party are clear," adding, "We propose overcoming this disaster by utilizing other resources without imposing additional burdens on the people."
Meanwhile, in their opening remarks, Chairman Lee emphasized 'overcoming COVID-19,' while Leader Hwang stressed 'judgment on the regime.' Chairman Lee said, "I understand well the great pain and inconvenience you are experiencing due to COVID-19 and other issues," and added, "Because of the people, I am confident that the Republic of Korea will surely overcome the COVID-19 war." Leader Hwang said, "Despite causing a total crisis over the past three years, this regime has consistently engaged in self-praise," and stated, "This general election is a vote to evaluate whether to revive the economy or to save Cho Kuk (former Minister of Justice)."
