Additional Emergency COVID-19 Relief Supplies Provided to Vulnerable North Korean Defectors

On the afternoon of the 29th of last month, passengers arriving on flights from Europe were undergoing COVID-19 testing at a screening clinic set up in Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport.

The South-North Hana Foundation announced on the 6th that it will provide additional emergency relief supplies for vulnerable North Korean defectors affected by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

A total of 636 elderly living alone and senior citizens nationwide, identified as needing support through local Hana Centers, are the additional recipients. The relief supply kits consist of infection prevention items such as hand sanitizers, as well as daily necessities including ready-to-eat meals.

This additional support has been prepared for vulnerable North Korean defectors who face restrictions in purchasing daily necessities and personal hygiene products due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation and movement restrictions.

Last month on the 16th, the foundation provided the first round of emergency relief supply kits to 420 elderly living alone and senior citizens in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, where COVID-19 damage was concentrated.

The foundation stated, "We plan to actively utilize private donations to help vulnerable North Korean defectors overcome the COVID-19 crisis and minimize damage," and added, "We are also considering additional support for North Korean defector households facing crises such as livelihood difficulties due to COVID-19 damage."
