Seongdong-gu Urban Management Corporation Offers Sports Center Programs via Video for Home Access... Established to Relieve Residents' Stress and Depression Amid Prolonged COVID-19 Closures
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) affiliated organization Seongdong-gu Urban Management Corporation (hereinafter referred to as the Corporation) provides online educational program services including ‘Smart Home Training’ so that residents can easily continue physical education and educational activities at home through video and video conferencing systems.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Corporation temporarily closed all sports centers in the area, including the Seongdong-gu Citizens Comprehensive Sports Center, from February 19, when the first confirmed case in Seongdong-gu occurred. To relieve psychological stress and depression of sports facility users and residents due to the prolonged closure, an online service was prepared so that existing programs can be learned at home.
‘Home Training’ is a program in which professional instructors directly produce and provide a total of nine themed videos including core exercises, small equipment exercises, and bodyweight strength exercises that can be easily followed at home, targeting about 10,000 gym members of Seongdong-gu Citizens Comprehensive Sports Center and Open Kumho Education and Culture Center.
The program can also be found on the Corporation’s official SNS such as blog and Facebook, as well as the Seongdong-gu Office website.
‘Home School’ is an educational program prepared for about 230 children and their parents of the ‘Seongdong Early Childhood Physical Ability Group’ operated by the Corporation. Three weeks’ worth of cognitive and physical education program videos are uploaded to an online group communication room where the children and parents participate, and a two-way real-time interactive program between children, parents, and program teachers is conducted twice a week using the Corporation’s existing video conferencing program.
Kim __, a member who used the gym at Seongdong-gu Citizens Comprehensive Sports Center, left a comment on the Corporation’s website saying, “Because of COVID-19, I couldn’t attend classes, so I was trying to exercise at home these days, and I’m just grateful that they made customized videos and uploaded them.”
A parent of a child in the Early Childhood Physical Ability Group said, “The children excitedly followed along while listening to music,” and “It was a very good time to see the teacher’s face on video after a long time.”
Another parent expressed enthusiastic response, saying, “Since my son watched the first video, he keeps asking when the teacher will upload another one and repeatedly watches the video over and over.”
In addition to sports center programs, Seongdong-gu is conducting video classes for resident autonomy programs operated by the neighborhood community centers through SNS communication rooms, and the lifelong learning center ‘Dokseodang Humanities Academy’ has created an online platform on its website since the 1st, allowing all ages including children and adolescents to take lifelong learning classes by category from home.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Due to the prolonged closure of public facilities caused by COVID-19, many residents are struggling with daily inconveniences and depression,” and added, “We will do our best to provide mental stability and a healthy life for residents through various methods and attempts including online learning, even if it is insufficient.”
