Clean Bedrooms to Prevent COVID-19... Wash Cotton Duvet Covers and Pillowcases Weekly

[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] As the time spent at home increases due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the importance of cleanliness at home is rising. In particular, bedding in the bedroom, where a long time is spent sleeping and resting, is easily contaminated by house dust mites, sweat, and dead skin cells, and since it comes into direct contact with the skin, hygiene must be carefully managed.

Life beauty company Aekyung Industrial's neutral detergent brand 'Wool Shampoo' introduces lifestyle information for managing bedding that ensures comfortable rest. Cotton blankets and pillowcases, which are most commonly used at home, should be washed at least once every 1 to 2 weeks. This is because they are used more frequently than other bedding and come into direct contact with the face and skin, making them prone to contamination by skin dead cells and oils. If washing is difficult, airing them out in the wind and sunlight about once a week is recommended.

Cotton bedding is easy to manage as it can be washed with water, but it is best to wash it in lukewarm water. Especially, washing with a neutral detergent helps care for the fibers. Aekyung Industrial's Wool Shampoo is the first neutral detergent in Korea to receive the Woolmark certification, and with a lower pH than alkaline detergents, it helps care for fibers.

Wool blankets, which are used most frequently at home regardless of the season, should first be checked to see if they are washable. If they are washable, it is best to hand wash them in cold water using a neutral detergent. Frequent washing can reduce their heat retention, so washing once every 2 to 3 years is recommended. Rather than frequent washing, regular dusting or drying in the shade is more effective for maintenance.

In spring, when indoor temperatures begin to warm, house dust mites breed actively. House dust mites, which can cause dermatitis or asthma, feed on human skin cells or organic matter such as mold, so it is important to keep mattresses clean.

To prevent the breeding of house dust mites, the mattress, where human skin cells such as dead skin and dandruff easily fall, must be kept clean. First, remove contaminants using box tape, then vacuum to remove any remaining contaminants.

If house dust mites are not easily removed even after cleaning, it is good to stand the mattress in the yard or balcony for ventilation. Hanging it out in strong sunlight can effectively remove bacteria and house dust mites.
