LCD Supply Until the End of This Year
Transition Deployment of Large Business Division
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Display announced on the 31st that it will stop producing liquid crystal displays (LCD) starting next year and accelerate its business transition to the next-generation display, 'Quantum Dot (QD)'.
Samsung Display explained that this decision is a strategic choice to enhance the competitiveness of the large display business and to expedite the commercialization of next-generation technology.
Samsung Display plans to accelerate its entry into the QD market next year based on a cooperative ecosystem with domestic companies.
Accordingly, it stated that it will supply the LCD quantities requested by customers without disruption until the end of this year.
Samsung Display held a briefing session on this matter for executives and employees of the large business division at the Asan plant on the same day, and plans to explain the future business direction to customers and partners as well.
Employees in the LCD development and manufacturing fields will be reassigned to the small and medium business division and the QD sector when LCD production ends.
Samsung Display had suspended part of its 8th LCD line last year as LCD panel prices continued to plunge due to oversupply from China.
