[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is improving the pedestrian environment in the Haengdang and Eungbong-dong areas by newly installing a crosswalk in front of the north side of Eungbong Intersection and reinstalling a pedestrian overpass on the school route of Haengdang Elementary School.

On the north side of Eungbong Intersection, there is no crosswalk, causing inconvenience for residents using public transportation from Haengdang Sindonga Apartments, who have to cross the street three times.

Accordingly, for the convenience of residents, the district has requested the installation of a crosswalk to the Seoul Metropolitan Government since 2018 and has conducted continuous on-site inspections and consultations with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Seongdong Police Station regarding issues and multifaceted solutions for the new crosswalk installation.

As a result, on the 19th, the “Installation of a Crosswalk on the North Side of Eungbong Intersection” was approved at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Traffic Safety Facility Review, making it possible to install the crosswalk in the second half of this year. Once completed, it is expected to resolve the long-standing inconvenience of passage for residents of Haengdang and Eungbong-dong.

At Gosan-ro (Haengdang 1-dong 330-2), the main school route in front of Haengdang Elementary School, an existing pedestrian overpass was installed, but after a safety inspection in April 2018, it was rated as a disaster-risk facility with a D grade and was dismantled in August of the same year.

Since then, for the safety of commuting students and following requests from Haengdang Elementary School parents and residents, the district decided to reinstall the pedestrian overpass in November last year, secured 1.5 billion KRW for installation costs, and aims to complete construction by July this year.

This pedestrian overpass will differ from the previous one by including an elevator as a mobility convenience facility for the transportation vulnerable.

Additionally, an emergency bell using Internet of Things (IoT) technology will be installed in the elevator, and a snow melting system will be introduced by installing heating wires on the overpass floor to automatically detect temperature and snowfall.

Furthermore, smart security lights and LED character-type signboards will be installed, creating a ‘smart pedestrian overpass’ incorporating various smart technologies.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The installation of the crosswalk at Eungbong Intersection and the pedestrian overpass is expected to greatly improve the pedestrian environment in the Haengdang and Eungbong areas. We will continue to make efforts to improve traffic and pedestrian environments at key points that cause inconvenience to residents’ daily lives.”
