Despite COVID-19 Impact, Genesis New G80 Online Debut 'Successful'

[Asia Economy Reporter Su-yeon Woo] Genesis's ambitious new model, the new G80, successfully debuted in the global market on the 30th through an online event. As online launch events have become common to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the G80 also announced its launch news via live streaming.

At noon on the day, Genesis showcased the 3rd generation fully redesigned G80 through various online channels such as YouTube, Naver TV, and Facebook. The launch event, broadcast live via streaming, was aired simultaneously for consumers worldwide.

In the live video, Lee Sang-yeop, Executive Vice President and Head of Genesis Design Center, appeared first to introduce the design philosophy of the G80. He emphasized that the new G80's design is bold, progressive, and the most Korean design. Regarding the G80's signature design element, the dual-line quad lamps, he explained, "The most iconic dual lines symbolize Genesis," adding, "It expresses the journey to find the perfect balance between personal space and advanced technology."

Genesis widened the 3rd generation G80 by 35mm compared to the previous model and lowered the height by 15mm, achieving the most refined proportions and a confident design that a rear-wheel-drive sedan can have. The front features Genesis's unique Crest grille and dual-line quad lamps, presenting a grand and modern image.

The side profile features a 'Parabolic Line' that starts from the quad lamps on the body surface, runs along the upper part of the doors, and gradually lowers toward the rear, reminiscent of the elegant appearance of classic cars. The rear expresses the new G80's unique impression through the quad lamps and a horseshoe-shaped rounded recessed trunk surface.

The interior design pursues the 'beauty of emptiness,' providing a spacious personal area while optimizing the layout of functional controls. The thickness of the A-pillar (the body between the front windshield and side window) and the bezel of the room mirror were reduced, and the height of the crash pad (including the instrument panel and storage compartments) was lowered to create a 'panoramic view' that offers a spacious and open feeling when the driver is seated.

Next, Albert Biermann, President of Hyundai-Kia R&D Division, appeared in the video to introduce the dynamic powertrain and advanced technologies of the Genesis G80. Biermann emphasized, "We developed next-generation sensor fusion technology for Genesis models," adding, "This is one of our core achievements to provide best-in-class safety."

The G80 secured dynamic and quiet power performance by applying three engine options: gasoline 2.5 turbo, gasoline 3.5 turbo, and diesel 2.2, with a body 125kg lighter than the 2nd generation. The gasoline 2.5 turbo model delivers a maximum output of 304 horsepower (PS) and maximum torque of 43.0 kgf·m, while the gasoline 3.5 turbo model produces a maximum output of 380 horsepower (PS) and maximum torque of 54.0 kgf·m, achieving top-level performance in its class. The diesel 2.2 model offers a maximum output of 210 horsepower (PS), maximum torque of 45.0 kgf·m, and a combined fuel efficiency of 14.6 km/l (based on 18-inch tires), ensuring balanced performance.

Additionally, the G80 applies advanced active safety-based autonomous driving technologies and safety features that assess dangerous situations unnoticed by the driver and control the vehicle, protecting passengers comprehensively from the moment they enter to when they exit the car. The intelligent technologies applied include ▲Highway Driving Assist II ▲Smart Cruise Control linked to driving style ▲Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control ▲Pre-active Safety Seat ▲Multi-collision Prevention Automatic Braking System, among others.

Highway Driving Assist II (HDA II) not only assists highway driving but also supports lane changes and responds to vehicles cutting in at close range in congested situations below 20 km/h, helping drivers drive conveniently in various scenarios. Notably, Genesis applied the Pre-active Safety Seat for the first time in Korea in the G80. The Pre-active Safety Seat adjusts the front passenger seatback forward to a safe posture to protect the occupant in case of frontal collisions, sudden braking, or anticipated turns.

Furthermore, the G80 is equipped with various evolved convenience features from Genesis, providing a high level of convenience to the driver. The Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) supports remote forward and backward parking in tight spaces, as well as perpendicular and parallel parking functions, reducing the driver's parking burden. The 14.5-inch infotainment system, enhanced for convenience by integration with the Genesis Integrated Controller, supports augmented reality navigation, Genesis Quick Guide, Genesis CarPay, and valet mode.
