[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is operating autonomous community center programs that can be watched and listened to at home using SNS such as YouTube.

Since the first confirmed case in Seongdong-gu occurred on the 19th of last month, all public facilities in the area have been closed, and various programs that were operated at each dong community center have been completely suspended.

The community center programs were popular among residents because they offered desired lectures at lower tuition fees than nearby academies. As the COVID-19 situation prolongs, residents who used to attend these programs are increasingly eager to participate again.

Accordingly, the district is operating ‘SNS Home Lectures’ so that students can watch and listen to the lectures they used to attend at the community centers from home, helping to alleviate their anxiety and tired daily lives.

This home lecture program has been made possible by the voluntary talent donation of instructors from about 10 programs such as Pilates, abdominal breathing, dance, English, and paper folding operated in each dong. They upload videos and materials they filmed themselves using their own YouTube channels, Band, or SNS communication rooms, and conduct classes while interacting with students.

Students can watch videos of forgotten yoga poses and follow along at home, and listen to the instructor’s voice to learn English pronunciation.

Also, it enables communication with neighboring residents whom they have not met for a long time, allowing students to relieve accumulated stress and alleviate the boredom of daily life.

In addition, the Seongdong Global Experience Center, a living English experience learning center for Seongdong-gu students, has been posting two videos daily on its website from March 24 to April 3 for two weeks under the theme ‘Immerse Yourself in English.’

The videos are conducted by four native English-speaking instructors, each covering topics such as introducing Korean landmarks, telling Greek mythology, space travel, and DIY crafts. Through the videos, they ask students questions or assign tasks, enabling interactive online communication with students who cannot engage in outdoor activities due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Due to the prolonged closure of public facilities, many residents from young students to the elderly are experiencing increased daily inconveniences and depression. We will do our best to help residents gain some peace of mind and healing through various methods and attempts.”
