Turkey Sees Daily Increase of Over 2,000 New COVID-19 Cases

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Turkey surged by more than 2,000 in a single day. Since the first confirmed case on the 11th, this is the first time the daily number of new confirmed cases has exceeded 2,000.

According to Reuters on the 27th (local time), Fahrettin Koca, Turkey's Minister of Health, stated at a press conference held late that day, "The number of confirmed cases increased by 2,069 in one day, reaching 5,698." He also reported that the death toll from the infection rose by 17 to 92.

Minister Koca emphasized the need for broader measures to respond to COVID-19 in this regard.

Following the news of the surge in confirmed cases, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged citizens to voluntarily self-isolate and avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary.

President Erdogan also announced the suspension of international flights and stated that pandemic committees would be formed in 30 cities to respond to COVID-19.

The Turkish government had previously ordered nationwide school closures until the 30th of next month to curb the spread of COVID-19 and mandated the closure of cafes, cinemas, gyms, and other facilities.
