[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) announced that warm donation efforts from various sectors, including children and students, continue amid the COVID-19 crisis.
On the 26th, 8-year-old Kim In-woo visited the Heukseok-dong Community Center with his mother and handed over 1,287,000 won, which he had saved from New Year's money and allowance, along with a letter to the staff.
Kim decided to donate after seeing on TV how difficult it was for people to obtain masks and hand sanitizers.
In Kim’s letter, he stated that out of his 1,348,000 won allowance, he wanted to keep 61,000 won as a memento of the donation, and requested that the donation be used to purchase masks or hand sanitizers for those struggling due to COVID-19.
On the same day, Sangdo 1-dong also shared warm news. Song Min-ji and Kang Ji-won, third-year students at Munyoung Girls' High School, donated 40 hand sanitizers and 40 filter-replacement cotton masks each.
The two students said they produced COVID-19 donation keyrings and purchased the donated items with the entire 330,000 won proceeds from sales on social media.
The Sangdo 1-dong Community Center plans to deliver the students’ heartfelt donations to 40 vulnerable individuals. On the 20th, an anonymous little angel left a piggy bank at the civil service window, asking for it to be used for a good cause.
The community center deposited the donation into the Community Chest of Korea so that the funds could be used where the donors wished.
Additionally, on the 23rd, four graduate students from Soongsil University’s Department of Chemical Engineering visited the Dongjak-gu Public Health Center and delivered 50 handmade tiramisus, and on the 24th, an anonymous elementary school student donated 70 masks as encouragement supplies.
On the afternoon of the 27th, to share the pain of low-income vulnerable groups suffering from the prolonged COVID-19 situation, Park Sang-bae, chairman of Sadang Saemaeul Geumgo, and its executives returned part of their salaries and donated 10 million won to the district.
The district plans to purchase and support daily necessities and masks for low-income residents in welfare facilities.
On the 26th, Song Minji and Kang Jiwon, students of Munyeong Girls' High School, donated masks and hand sanitizers at the Sangdo 1-dong Community Center.
Lee Chang-woo, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, “In these difficult times due to COVID-19, the warm actions of residents will be the driving force to overcome the crisis,” and added, “We sincerely thank everyone who has joined the donation efforts.”
