Hyundai Steel employees are using artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to monitor the production process at the steel mill.
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyundai Steel is accelerating innovative management by promoting the establishment of an advanced "Smart Enterprise" that embodies company-wide smart transformation.
While the existing smart factory focused on the advancement of manufacturing and production sectors, the Smart Enterprise is a concept that builds smart management across all processes, including manufacturing, production, systems, and infrastructure.
To this end, Hyundai Steel positioned a Process Innovation Task Force Team (TFT), which executes smart management in the process, system, and infrastructure sectors, directly under the president’s office earlier this year. The plan is to complete the Smart Enterprise system by 2025 through the integration of smart factory advancement and smart management.
Since 2017, Hyundai Steel has been advancing its smart factory by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to improve the production process and technological capabilities of its steelworks. Going a step further, as part of preliminary work to achieve the Smart Enterprise, it established a dedicated smart factory organization at the Dangjin Steelworks in August last year, developing and promoting AI-related specialized training programs to nurture expert talent.
This year, to expand talent development, the "Smart Factory Academy," which started at the Dangjin Steelworks last year, was extended to the Incheon and Pohang plants from January.
The Smart Factory Academy is a basic training course for cultivating dedicated personnel to promote smart factories, and last year, 47 graduates completed the first course at the Dangjin Steelworks. Some of them are conducting three pilot projects for process improvement through close customized training with external specialized companies, and from this year, the scope of these projects will be further expanded.
The expansion of the Smart Factory Academy to the Incheon and Pohang plants is significant as it lays the foundation for Hyundai Steel’s company-wide Smart Enterprise establishment.
A Hyundai Steel official said, "Through the cultivation of specialized personnel, we plan to establish an innovative system and culture that can maximize customer value by building a Smart Enterprise."
